Getting to Know Rieta Dufurrena By Lauren Crivelli - January
29, 2016 CompetitorCentral.com
a champion is something every breeder, owner, trainer and
showman dreams of. In 2015, Rieta Dufurrena made that dream
a reality with her homegrown red roan stallion, Stevie Rey
Von, at the NCHA Futurity. The duo laid down incredible run
after incredible run to eventually be named the Champion in
the Limited Non Pro with an impressive score of 220. Her
family played an integral part in this success story, taking
them back to their early days of cutting. “We started from
nothing and worked our way up.”
Rieta‘s dad, Ed
Dufurrena, has been training cutting horses for the past
twenty years, getting his start aboard a mare named Smart
Little Boogie. Ed had been training working cow horses and
rodeoing, when he was handed a cutting horse to train. “The
owner handed her to him and said, ‘Train her,’” Rieta
explained. Her dad was taken aback, saying, “I don’t know
anything about cutting.” Apparently, all the man had to say
was, “You’ll figure it out.” Ed spent many long hours
watching and studying successful trainers in the industry,
in hopes of creating his own style and program. It worked,
and he went on to win several major events with the mare.
Smart Little Boogie has continued to be a part of the
Dufurrena family as a broodmare. She was the mother to their
great mare Nievas, and the grandmother to Miss Ella Rey, a
mare that both Rieta and her brother, Brandon, showed
successfully. Brandon won the 2013 AQHA World Championship
in Amateur Cutting on Miss Ella Rey, and Rieta went back to
successfully defend the title in 2014. Rieta also showed her
last year in the NCHA World Finals. The siblings plan to
continue showing the mare in 2016, in order to finish off
her earnings so that she can claim a spot in the NCHA Hall
of Fame. “She is an incredible mare. She loves her job. She
goes out there and gives 100% everytime,” Rieta shared.
Ed Dufurrena rocked the house with Stevie Rey Von to take out the 2015 NCHA Open Futurity Championship in the Will Rogers Coliseum at Fort Worth. In front of a packed crowd, Ed and his home-bred stud (Metallic Cat x Miss Ella Rey) put in a string of hard stops to mark an impressive 225, some 4 points ahead of reserve champion Lindy Burch. It's been an extremely successful show all up for the Dufurrena family, with daughter Rieta also winning the Limited Non Pro Futurity on Stevie Rey Von and their horse Purple Reyn named Non Pro Horse Of The Year. Ed spoke with CHTO's Simone Cobb saying his win was a dream come true. Watch his run below!#2015NCHAFuturity #2015NCHAFuturityChampionNational Cutting Horse Association
